Corned Beef Dinner Raises Money for the Center of the Blind

Montville turned out in force for the Montville Lions corned beef and cabbage dinner Sunday to raise money for the Center of the Blind.

The event began a little slowly, said ticket-takers Patricia Dougherty and Kathy Fotta, but it picked up quickly, and soon enough, the room was filled with people from Montville and beyond, happily eating corned beef, cabbage, carrots, potatoes and cookies.

Barbara Bostwick, the executive director of the Center of the Blind, says the center, which is located in New London, helps offer a place for blind people to interact socially, and to learn new skills, as well. Fund-raisers like this one are a major source of the center's funding.

Lynne Magee, who is the group's secretary,  said that the center offers classes in Braille, as well as in computers and crafts. Volunteers provide some transportation, as well.

"The center provides a place for the blind and visually impaired to have a social life," she said.

Lions Club members Flo Turner and Tiffany Williams showed the huge eyeglasses they'd made for the event (the glasses were covered in shamrocks and green and white lights) and also showed off a display of all the causes to which the Lions contribute.
