Fireworks Are Not Just For The 4th of July

A Round-Up Of Firework Shows In The Area, Add Any We Missed In The Comments!

It is almost July, which means it is firework season. Here are some events to go to (and if we missed any, feel to add them in the comments).

Fireworks Extravaganza, June 30

The Marina at American Wharf is having its 24th annual Fireworks Extravaganza at the Howard T. Brown Memorial Park in Norwich.

On Friday, June 29, there will be opening ceremonies at 5 p.m. and then live entertainment from 7 to 10 p.m. On Saturday, there are events from noon to 9 p.m., including face painting, street vendors and children’s rides. Then at 9 p.m. the event's 24th annual fireworks show begins.

Fireworks!, July 4

Misquamicut, R.I.

On July 4 at 9 p.m., there will be a fireworks show put on at Wuskenau Town Beach in Rhode Island. The fireworks are visible from anywhere on Misquamicut Beach.  

Sailfest/OpSail 2012, July 6 to 9

East Lyme, Groton, and New London

OpSail, the parade of the tall ships, has merged with Sailfest to form one, massive four-day event.

The ships come into the Niantic Bay on Friday, July 6th. That evening at 6:30 there will be a cook-out for the crew and the public at McCooks Beach and a food stroll in downtown Niantic.

On Saturday, July 7th, the ships depart from Niantic at 9:30 a.m. and head to New London. There are several good viewing spots at that time, including Harkness Park, Ocean Beach Park and Avery Point. The ships should hit the Thames River by 10 a.m., and then at 11 a.m. there will be a flyover by the United States Coast Guard in New London.

At 12:15 p.m., there will be New London’s opening ceremonies at Fort Trumbull, complete with speeches by Gov. Dannel Malloy and other dignitaries. Then, the party begins with music and other events at Fort Trumbull. People will be able to visit the ships at Fort Trumbull and the state pier from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m.

The night ends as it always does with fireworks between New London and Groton beginning at 9 p.m.

Sunday, the celebration continues with events at Fort Trumbull from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. People will also be able to visit the ships at the state pier and at Fort Trumbull from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

On Monday, the ships sail away, beginning at 11 a.m. and ending at 1:30 p.m. There again will be many good views of this along the shoreline.

Celebrate East Lyme, July 21

Downtown Niantic

The 12th annual Celebrate East Lyme event will take place on Saturday, July 21 from 3 to 9 p.m. Downtown Niantic will be filled with vendors and things to do, as well as a concert from the . And as always, the night ends with a firework display over Niantic Bay.

Hot Summer Fun Rooftop Fireworks, Every Wednesday

Mohegan Sun Casino

The Mohegan Sun Casino has its Hot Summer Run Rooftop Fireworks Displays every Wednesday, which have started and run until August 29. The fireworks can be viewed on top of the Riverview Garage.
