Montville High School's Summer Soccer Team Grabs Gold at Nutmeg Games

In its 26th year, the amateur sports competition is for athletes from 6 to 18.

 

We’re all excited about the 2012 Summer Olympics. But did you know that Montville High School’s summer soccer team just nabbed the gold at the Nutmeg Games?

The team also plays in a summer league at Connecticut College and train in the summer at the High School. Many, if not most, of these kids have been involved in the town's soccer club, Montville Youth Soccer since they were preschoolers and are now part of the high school program.

They have been participating in the Nutmeg State Games for several years and in the last three have earned bronze and silver medals, and now, gold! And this year they maintained their first place standing through out the tournament.

The team played the championship round at Veteran's Memorial Stadium in New Britain on July 29 versus Newington; final score was 2-1 which earned them the gold. Players Connor Leeman and Gabe Diaz scored the two goals.

According to its website, the Nutmeg Games is the “largest amateur multi-sport event in the state. Celebrating its 24th year, more than 6,000 athletes from 6 to 18 compete in sports from archery to wrestling.
