Tyl Middle School Chamber Choir Takes Home The Gold At Great East Festival

The Tyl Middle School Chamber Choir kept up a stellar record at the Great East Festival, coming home with another gold medal rating.

Judy Abrams, choral director at the school, said students have performed at the Six Flags festival for three years and won the gold medal each time. The festival intends to "serve as a support system for your music performance groups and to provide a formative evaluation in a non-threatening atmosphere," according to its website, and includes band, orchestra, woodwind, and ensemble performances as well. Singers compete not against other school groups, but against a score sheet.

"Our performance was sandwiched in between two high school groups, so it was a little daunting, but the students met the challenge and sang beautifully," Abrams said of the May 24 performance.  "The judges commented that they were quite pleased with the strength and quality of the boys' voices, and they were impressed with the maturity of all the singers, both musically and in demeanor."

The choir will hold two more performances in the 2012-2013 school year. At 11 a.m. on June 8, they will sing "The Star Spangled Banner" at Dodd Stadium in Norwich to open the Relay for Life. The group will return to the stadium on June 23 for a 4 p.m. performance of the national anthem at the Connecticut Tigers' first weekend home game.
