Superintendent Has Ideas and Tips for Parents

Aubin cautions people to watch the progress of Hurricane Irene, as well

Montville Public Schools start on Monday, and Superintendent Pamela Aubin has some tips.

Parents should have received letters about transportation. Remember that buses are likely to be delayed on the first few days of school; Aubin asks parents to be patient.

She also asks that parents complete all required forms and ensure that the school has up-to-date contact information.

Aubin has some tips to help parents guide their children's transition to school:

For young children entering school

  • Remain “matter of fact” and positive to assist your child in the adjustment to school
  • Talk with your child about what he/she will do in school.
  • Describe activities your child will do in school
  • Explain some basic rules your child will have to follow in school and why they are necessary

For older children:

  • Prepare your child for the school schedule. Encourage him or her to take responsibility for his or her morning routine; it will make for a less hectic household.
  • Encourage effort and provide clear expectations about your child's responsibility to come to school prepared to learn.
  • Help your child develop the habit of organization. All students in grades 6-12 students and some elementary grades have student planners/agendas; encourage their use.
  • Encourage your child to join in extracurricular activities.
  • Monitor your child’s use of electronics, including cell phones, computers, video games and social networking sites.
  • Take advantage of the Parent Portal at Montville High School and Tyl Middle School to stay informed of your child’s progress.  Information will be forthcoming from the schools.
  • Use the school website to stay informed of events at the school.
  • Review the school handbook with your child.  Discuss the school discipline code and bullying policy with your child.

The school calendar is available on the district home page under “Quick Links."
