Because of the sheer number of days school has been canceled since the beginning of the 2012-2013 year, the last day of school before summer vacation has gone from mid to late June.
And it’s still only February.
Beginning with Superstorm Sandy last fall, power outages from nor’easters, snow days, and blizzard days, nearly a week has been added to the end of the school year.
The original, planned last day of school was slated for June 13; now it’s June 21.
Unlike other districts that are dipping in to vacation time to offset the missed days, Montville’s vacation days appear intact: the Presidents Day holiday, which consists of next Monday and Tuesday, Feb. 18 and 19 and the spring vacation, April 15 – April 19.
State law requires 182 student school days.
But as Superintendent Pamela Aubin said at Tuesday’s Board of education meeting when she announced the new last day of school, it’s still winter, still early in the year and that date is certainly not fixed. Especially if we see anymore storms.
