Montville Police Stepping up School Patrols in Wake of Newtown School Shooting

Police will be patrolling all Montville schools including parking lots. School resource officer will be working with students.

Montville Police will be stepping up patrols at all Montville schools, according to Resident State Trooper Sgt. Martin Martinez. And an officer will be posted at each school for openings.

“And we’ll patrol the parking lots of all the schools. We don’t want to upset children, disrupt school schedules, but we will be present,” Martinez said.

Montville Public Schools Resource Officer Karen Moorehead said she will greet students as they enter Montville High School, will be there at the end of the day an Tyl Middle School and will visit schools in the district.

"I will be available for any student to talk or answer questions," she said. Moorehead said she is "available anytime" for students and families in person, over the phone or via email.

Moorehead said she's confident in the schools' security plans.

"All of Montville Public Schools have awesome safety procedures. We regularly do our lockdown drills." And in fact, ironically, Oakdale School held a "very successful" lockdown drill Friday morning.

Schools Superintendent Pamela Aubin said, “all security and safety plans are in place.”

She said the horror of the school shootings at the Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown “reminds why we have all the drills we do.”

“But despite the best laid plans, horrible things happen and it doesn’t matter if you’re an urban or suburban school.  But we are as prepared as we can be. The children’s safety is our first priority,” Aubin said.
