Now that the legislative session is over and many new bills and laws will take effect July 1, the 2011 Public Act 0051 reorganizes many state agencies.
As of July 1, there is no longer a Department of Public Safety. It has been renamed Emergency Services and Public Protection. The new agency would encompass the State Police, Emergency Management and Homeland Security divisions under a new Commissioner.
The State Fire Marshal's Office and State Building Official has been relocated under the Department of Construction Services for construction and code enforcement. Under the new Department the Commissioner will appoint a State Fire Marshal who may appoint Deputies, no where in the bill did it talk about a State Building Official, I would guess the Commissioner of Construction Services would assume this position.
