VIDEO: McDaniel Looks Ahead

Democrat Ron McDaniel has won the race to become mayor of Montville, winning 2,079 votes to Donna Jacobson's 1,235.

Signaling the inclusive government McDaniel is promising to build, he stressed Tuesday night that his victory was the work of many hands. 

"We ran a nice, clean campaign, and tried to remain civil," he said.

Jacobson, , said Tuesday night that she was OK with the election results, and even with what happened during her campaign.

"This was a major character assassination," she said, "and I am OK with that, because I know who I am. I can hold my head up and look in the mirror tomorrow and I don’t have a problem doing that. I think that’s what it all comes down to."

She said she is "looking forward to sitting down and being able to write. I’m free."

During the campaign, McDaniel, who raised far more money than Jacobson raised, said would be to keep his door and ears open at all times, devoting himself to listening to the citizens of Montville.

Tuesday night, McDaniel reached out to the Republicans. He noted that Dana McFee had stopped in to the Democrats' victory celebration at the Montville Polish Club to congratulate him and the other Democrats.

He embraced Rosetta Jones, who also stopped in at the club to offer her congratulations. Jones and McFee are the minority candidates on the new council.

McDaniel also said that "Donna and I are not that far apart. I wish her the best, nd hope she sill still work with the town and other town leaders, seeing how we can work together to make southeastern Connecticut a better place."

Of the 9,626 people registered to vote in Montville, 3,355 - or 34.8 percent - voted in Tuesday's election.
