Tyl Chamber Choir to Perform at Capitol Today

Part of ArtSlam 2013, the select choir will sing for legislators and then will speak with policy makers about the need for the arts in public education

The Tyl Middle School Chamber Choir is performing at the state Capitol in Hartford today.

Connecticut Music Educators Association, partnering with other art education groups, presents ArtSlam 2013 at the capitol. The Montville middle school singers will be performing in a line-up that includes a jazz combo, string ensemble and a woodwind quartet. The event will be held in the Old Judiciary Room at the Capitol, accompanied by Judy Abrams, Tyl director of choral music.

The event is an exhibition of student art and music designed to bring an awareness of arts education to legislators.

The idea, Abrams said, is to “encourage policymakers to keep music, drama and arts education in the public schools.”

Abrams said the Tyl Chamber Choir members, made up of "auditioned 7th and 8th grade students, have written personal letters to their legislators, relating the importance of music in their lives and especially their experiences with music in school.”

“The letters have been quite passionate and moving, some bringing tears to my eyes," she said in an email to Patch. “This experience teaches them to use their voices for more than just singing: they learn to be an active voice and get involved in public policy-making.”

The choir will perform for legislators at 1 p.m. and then meet with them after the performance.

We’re looking forward to getting photos and video from the performance and when we do, we’ll share them with you!
