Quilt Hanging in Town Hall Created by Montville Seniors is a Piece of Art and History

Unique tapestry quilt is one of a number of pieces of art created by seniors being showcased at Town Hall.

It’s a labor of love and dedication, a work of art, a patriotic symbol and it’s yours, Montville.

A quilt that hangs as art, was begun by Joyce Getchell several years ago, she hand cut, sewed, and embroidered 50 quilting squares featuring each state’s name, year it entered in to the union, its state flower and bird. Sadly Joyce passed away before it would be sewn together and become the work of art that now hangs in Montville Town Hall.

“It’s a fantastic and unique piece of work,” said Mayor Ronald McDaniel. “We’re honored and proud to have it displayed.”

According to Kathleen Doherty-Peck, Director of Senior and Social Services, yeas later, the baton would be picked up in the Senior Center arts and crafts class by Ruby Lord who sewed all the squares together to create the very large and stunning quilt.

“It really is incredible,” Doherty-Peck said.

Wanting to showcase it, the idea to have it reside in Town Hall was an idea “fully supported,” she said, by McDaniel.

In fact, a number of pieces of senior artwork are being showcased in Town Hall, which feels like a local gallery, these days.

“The seniors work so hard. Many of them have never picked up a paint brush before and are now producing art and that’s absolutely amazing,” Doherty Peck said.
