Police Will Get Money for DUI Stops

Montville Police Officer Robin Salvatore has written grants for DUI enforcement and seatbelt/child safety seat programs

The Montville Police Department will receive a grant from the state this year for $55,650, to hold five DUI enforcement spot-checks in town between May and September.

The events, , involve stopping drivers on a particular road, and testing and arresting ones who are driving while under the influence of drugs and/or alcohol.

The grant proposal was written by Robin Salvatore, who said she has been writing proposals for the department for 15 years.

At the Town Council meeting on Monday, Salvatore urged the Town Council to accept the grant, which it did, unanimously.

Salvatore said that departments from surrounding towns will come to Montville to help, just as Montville Police officers will assist when surrounding towns hold their events.

The Montville Department received special dispensation from the state for the events, Salvatore said. Usually, a constabulary like the Montville PD will be limited to one officer, but because Montville is a “casino-impact town,” Salvatore said, more officers may be involved.

“It’s kind of unheard-of,” she said, “but we can justify it by the numbers.”

The department also will receive $2,800 to hold a Click It or Ticket seatbelt enforcement campaign.
