Montville Wants the Money It's Owed

The sex-offender treatment center owes money to the WPCA, and Linda Rivera owes money to the town

There’s money owed to Montville, and Montville is working to get it.

In Monday’s Town Council meeting, council member Gary Murphy brought up two debts that are owed to the town.

The sex offender treatment facility – the January Center – owes the WPCA $37,000 for a connection fee, Murphy said.

“We are diligently trying to get that money back,” he said.

WPCA Administrator Brian Lynch said that the state, which owns the center, “has budget concerns, and will pay up by the end of the fiscal year.” He said he’d been speaking with state representatives for a few months about the connection fee.

In addition, Linda Rivera, a WPCA employee who was found guilty of embezzling funds, owes the town $55,700, Murphy said, and her probation period is coming to an end.

Rivera, who was sentenced to prison in 2007 after being found guilty of larceny, repaid the money she had embezzled - $51,536 – and was ordered to pay the cost of the investigation, $55,760.

Murphy said she is required to pay back the amount at $25 a month. At that rate, it will take her 2,230 months, or 185 years.

"There’s not a lot we can do,” Murphy said.
