Council to Discuss 2011-2012 Budget Proposals Tonight

Group of Councilors Has Specific Suggestions

The Montville Town Council is holding a special meeting tonight to take up the 2011-2012 budget proposal, and set the town’s mill rate.

The council received the Finance Committee’s budget proposal on Friday, and a group of councilors has suggested adjustments of roughly $31,500, according to a press release.

“It is our opinion that there can be more savings to the taxpayers in excess of $300,000,” the release says. “Considering the economic hardships that many residents, businesses and taxpayers are experiencing, it is imperative to reduce the budget as prudently as possible.”

The proposed changes from councilors Donna Jacobson, Ellen Hillman, Russ Bettham and Dana McFee include:

Adding the Town Aids Road Grant, and repayment from the WPCA to the recenut side, for a total of $246,000 added to the town’s revenue.

Restoring the Raymond Library’s usual funding, restoring the position of secretary in the Parks and Recreation Deparment, and changing that position so that 10 of the weekly hours are devoted to clerical work at the police department. The department had requested a part-time clerical worker.

These changes would add $33,668 to the budget, the group says.

The council would freeze hiring for the town, reduce the contingency fund, and return funding items to the capital budget for a reduction of $379,456.

The group’s specific recommendations are in one of the two pdfs that accompany this story; the Finance Committee's proposed budget is the other.
