Council Rescinds Senior Safety Zones Ordinance

And decides to do the same with the also recently approved Child Safety Zones

In a stunning turn-around, the Montville Town Council rescinded its passage of the contentious Senior Safety Zones ordinance and also, surprisingly, voted to do the same with the recently passed Child Safety Zones.

“My intention is, if (the senior safety zones) are a violation of civil rights   than we need to be consistent. I feel we must rescind both,” said Town Council President Candy Buebendorf.

The Connecticut affiliate of the American Civil Liberties Union was poised to challenge the Senior Safety Zone in court.

More than 530 citizens signed a petition created by Councilor Rosetta Jones to see the town law repealed.

“This ordinance would do nothing to protect seniors and everything to subject us to a lawsuit,” Jones said before the vote.

The law would have prohibited sex offenders from coming in to contact with senior citizens and face a $99 fine if they violated the ordinance. Opponents called the law unenforceable and unconstitutional.

Earlier this month, Commission on Aging members told Council liaison Billy Caron the town should back off the ordinance and wait to see if the state moves on enacting legislation. A bill made it through committee last year but did not make it past both General Assembly houses.

“I initially voted for it with reservations,” said Commission on Aging member John Geary. “And my reservations are a lot more activated now. Montville should sit on it for awhile. Montville has had a history of very bad lawsuits. I strongly recommend Montville cool its heels for a year or so. The town has had enough lawsuits.”

Montville Senior and Social Service director Kathleen Doherty-Peck as well as a group of seniors including Senior Center president Sandy Stauffer made an unsuccessful last ditch effort to see the zones remain through appeals in letters to the council which were referenced but ultimately, the decision of the Commission on Aging to hold off prevailed.

Finally, a smart move on the Council's part.

Just when I was proud of the council Candy then rescinded the child saftey zones. Why? They were not illeagle. Of course I don't think what she did was allowed for sevral reasons first that ordinance was already on the books as no petition was taken out against it secondly she never allowed public comment on the subject. Her arrogance never seases to amaze me

Not sure what the child safety zones had to do with the senior safety zones. Child safety zones already exist in every school in the state of connecticut. This just took it further to town parks and recreational facilities. It is a shame the council won't protect the most venerable people in town our youth. Oh yes that is right they don't vote. Sad.

This council has issues. Why is it not an ethics issue when a certain councilor and town employee go to the 33rd floor at the casino and get free food and drink?

In vindictive and cowardly fashion council democrats tried to repeal the child safety zones, but were unsuccessful due to councilor Buebendorf’s incompetence. While I personally opposed the child safety zones because I feel they are unenforceable and offer no protection for our children, I don’t believe this ordinance is a legal threat as was the senior zones and there were no plans to petition to repeal the child safety zones. So the child safety zones ARE STILL IN EFFECT.

I was quite amused by Councilor Longton's comments at the meeting as he bellowed his disgust and being sick to his stomach over the idea of repealing the senior safety zone ordinance and the turned around and voted in favor of its repeal Now that’s integrity!!

what do you mean that the child safety zones are still in effect? what happened cause Jones said they weren't going to be because of the petition

I had to laugh also especially when Chucky said seniors are sexually assulted as often as children. What planet is this guy from?

I'm really disapointed that "sweet little Laura Tanner" was part of that subterfuge the democrats were playing the other night. I really thought when she was elected that she would place herself above this kind of nonsense.
