Clarification: Water Restrictions Not Needed Yet

Summer water use restrictions are ready to be put into place as needed but they’re not yet required for East Lyme

On June 28, East Lyme Board of Selectmen held a public hearing on the implementation of water restrictions. This is required before the town can put water restrictions in place.

The notice approved by the Board of Selectmen at the meeting that followed has no start date. It simply reads:  “Water restrictions will be in effect from 9 a.m. on Friday through noon on Monday each week until further notice.”

This is designed to allow the town to move forward with water restrictions as needed.

Typically, First Selectman Paul Formica said, the Fourth of July weekend is one of those times but thanks to recent rain, the town has not deemed it necessary at this point. The town will announce if and when such restrictions are necessary.

We’ll let you know when that will be but until then, water your lawn at will!

(Note: The original story on this issue which ran on Friday, June 29, mistakenly reported that the restrictions started that day. The to reflect the correct information.)

Isn't the town's Water and Sewer Commission and Water Pollution Control Authority authorized and tasked with the management of our town's liquid resources? Why no comments or statements from these town entities about what the Selectmen are intending to do?

Hi Marcus, The Board of Selectmen only move the notice to impose water restrictions when the town water department says it's necessary. As the top governing body for the town (and under the town ordinance that allows water restrictions to be imposed), the action itself must be taken by the Board of Selectmen but only after a public hearing (which was held last week so the town could move forward when and if it becomes necessary without a big delay.) Town law also requires that an announcement be placed in a wide-circulating newspaper to let the public know when those restrictions will begin before they can take effect. To reiterate, this isn't something the Selectmen just decide to do. They do it when the people in charge of the town's water system tell them it's needed. Hope that clears things up a bit. I'm just learning about how all this works myself!
