Catch Them If You Can!

Greyhounds — those speedy dogs bred for racing — are coming to Corrigan prison in a new program for inmates.

On Saturday, four greyhounds were brought to the Corrigan-Radgowski Correctional Center, officially kicking off a new program designed to help both greyhounds and offenders alike.

The Connecticut Department of Correction has partnered with We Adopt Greyhounds (WAG), a greyhound adoption group in Glastonbury, to create The Connecticut Prison Greyhound Program, according to a press release.

The program consists of greyhounds being paired with inmate trainers for 10 weeks, during which time the dogs will be socialized and receive basic obedience training.  The dogs will also be evaluated for temperament and personality.  In addition to the inmate trainers, volunteers from WAG will work closely with the dogs and the inmate trainers, the release said.

Operations Director for WAG, Johanna Lewis has created a training curriculum, and will work closely with the volunteers from WAG as well as the inmate handlers, according to the release.

Offenders will also benefit from the training program – they will develop a sense of responsibility and patience, along with potential job skills, said the release.

The cost of training the first four WAG CT Prison Greyhound Dogs is approximately $1,500 per dog.
