Tribal Police to Gain More Authority

The legislature has granted full arrest powers to tribal police.

The Tribal police forces have been boosting their arsenals of veteran police officers in anticipation of a state bill that will grant them greater authority over suspected criminals.

The bill recently passed through the legislature and is on the governor’s desk for a final signature, according to a report in The Day.

State Sen. Andrea Stillman, D-Montville told reporters at The Daythat “the tribes had been asking for this change for years, and they have been ‘raiding’ local police departments to make sure they had the best police officers.”

According to the report, the current circumstances only allow the tribal police departments to hold someone at the scene of an incident and wait for a state police officer to arrest the person.
