State Police Report One Fatality Over Memorial Day Weekend

Drink driving arrests were up from last year, but in 2011, there were four fatal car crashes over the long holiday weekend

State police were busy over Memorial Day weekend, and while speeding and drunk driving arrests were up, there were fewer fatal crashes.

From midnight May 25 through midnight May 28, state police reported 279 accidents, with one involving a fatality. Overall, there were 77 arrests for drunk driving, and 1,797 drivers charged with speeding.

The fatal accident occurred on Route 8, exit 30, in Waterbury. There were 57 injuries reported from the accidents.

In 2011, state police recorded 260 car crashes and four of those were fatal. There were 70 drunk driving arrests last year, and 2,013 speeding citations.

Connecticut State Troopers will continue enforcement efforts as the summer months begin, said Lt. J. Paul Vance in a press release.” The “Click It Or Ticket” Campaign, our first campaign of this summer season, will be on going and continue over the summer months. The goal of the State Police enforcement effort is to rid the roads of aggressive and impaired & unsafe drivers.”
