Stamford Woman Who Tried to Ram U.S. Capitol, White House Gates Shot Dead

A woman who rammed the barricades at the U.S. Capitol and the White House earlier today before being shot dead was identified as Miriam Carey of Stamford, CT, a 34-year-old dental hygienist, according to a report citing law enforcement officials in the New Haven Register.

At least four helicopters are over the Woodside Green co-op apartment complex off of Bridge and Summer streets in Stamford where police believe Carey lived, as police stand watch with patrol car lights flashing.

Carey was unarmed, law enforcement sources said. All the shots in the incident, which occurred about 2:20 p.m., were fired by police trying to stop her," according to a 4:49 p.m. update on the Washington Post's website. 

Carey reportedly led police on a high-speed chase after ramming a gate to the White House, police told Georgetown Patch. There was a child in the car at the time, according to multiple news reports. The child was believed to be unharmed.

Connecticut's Congressional delegation was also safe following the afternoon shooting that put the Capitol in a temporary lockdown.
