'Red Flag' Alert Issued by National Weather Service

A 'red flag' alert means conditions are ripe for wildfires

The National Weather Service has issued a ‘red flag’ warning for Montville until 8 p.m. tonight. A red flag warning means “that critical fire weather conditions are expected or occurring (and) any fires that start may spread rapidly and become difficult to extinguish.”

The weather service said conditions including northwest winds of 15 to 25 and gusts to 35 MPH coupled with very low humidity, just 23 percent, are optimum for “rapid wildfire spread if ignition occurs.”
