Montville Has New SRO

Formerly the DARE officer, Karen Moorehead feels the School Resource Officer job opens doors for her

Montville Police Officer Karen Moorehead is officially – and happily - the new School Resource Officer for the town.

“I’ve only been there a day and a half,” she said on Thursday, “but I am very excited, and feeling very welcomed.”

Moorehead says the position “opens up so many moor doors for me.”

It gives her contact with students from kindergarten through 12th grade, she says, and this helps her do her job more effectively – and helps her get to know the students better, too.

Her office is at Montville High School. Then, she says, she will go to all the other schools, as well. She will visit the Leonard J. Tyl Middle School when there are problems, and also to interact with the kids.

She’ll be available at the elementary schools for “anything that needs doing.”

(On Saturday, just FYI, she will be at the Mohegan School Carnival, where she and principal Lori Caron will apparently engage in a pie-throwing contest…)

Moorehead says she knows many of the high school kids from the DARE program. While she was having lunch, more than one stood up and yelled a welcome at her across the cafeteria.

She has plans and goals for her work in the schools, but “right now, I truly want to settle in,” she said, “and look and see and listen.

“I’m so happy.”
