Montville Police Officer Details His Ideas for Public Safety Building

Rod McCauley Says His Ideas Would Cut Costs and Improve Safety; Lt. Leonard Bunnell Says the Time for Changing the Building's Design Has Passed

Rod McCauley, president of the Montville Police Union, broached a set of ideas Thursday to the Public Safety Building Committee about revisions to the planned public safety building.

In the detention area, McCauley said, his ideas would increase visibility and minimize the use of cameras inside the facility, thereby cutting costs.

He used the chalkboards in the meeting room to show how, if cells were moved to the perimeter of the area, the middle of the area would be opened up in a way that he said would be more beneficial.

The plan would cut out an attorney/client meeting room and a shower room, both of which he said were not needed.

McCauley also discussed the "man locks," a series of doors that are intended to minimize flight risk. He said the building doesn't need those locks.

He stressed that these were his own ideas, that he was not speaking for the entire force.

Lt. Leonard Bunnell said this morning that McCauley was "a little late," bringing his ideas to the table.

"The time to make suggestions has actually gone by," he said. "I'm happy with things (as they are planned) and the building committee is happy."

McCauley said he wanted to go on the record with his ideas.

Bunnell said McCauley, a former military officer, has had two tours overseas, and was responsible for construction projects in Iraq.

At the end of his presentation, McCauley said he has one overriding idea.

In the break room, he said, "Give us room for a table, that’s all we want."

'Give us a freaking table and we’ll be happy."
