Herrmann Announces Fire-Safety Poster Winners

Connie Herrmann, Fire Safety Instructor and New London County Coordination for the Statewide Fire Prevention Poster Contest, has announced the County Winners for 2012.

This contest theme is “Fire Prevention – Everyone/Everyday.” Its purpose is to promote child and adult awareness of fire prevention responsibilities, showing them we are all responsible for Fire Prevention.

This annual, statewide competition for fourth- and fifth-graders began in October. It is run by elementary school teachers in cooperation with the contest sponsors, The Connecticut Fire Marshals’ Association, Office of State Fire Marshal, Connecticut Fire Chiefs’ Association, State Board of Education and the Connecticut FAIR Plan (representing the insurance industry).

Posters from Bozrah, East Lyme, Lebanon, Lisbon, Montville, New London and Waterford were entered.

The New London County winners for 2012 are:

Grade 4

Ethan Green of Mrs. Shoemaker’s class at Quaker Hill Elementary School, Waterford, Fire Marshal Peter Schlink

Aaliyah Brooks of Mrs. Grancisconi’s class at Nathan Hale Elementary School, New London, Fire Marshal Calvin Darrow

Grade 5

Nicholas Zanghetti of Mrs. Worobey’s class at Great Neck Elementary School, Waterford, Fire Marshal Peter Schlink

Stephanie Ruggiero of Mrs. Bryer’s class at Mohegan Elementary School, Montville, Fire Marshal Raymond Occhialini

This completion comes with specific judging criteria. Neatness and Readability; Originality in Idea and Treatment; Is a Fire Prevention Message Conveyed; Relationship to the Theme of the caption and illustration; Emotional Impact and Reproducibility.

Each fourth- and fifth-grade class is offered the opportunity to enter, with one poster from each grade being chosen to represent that town in the New London County completion. Each of these students gets a certificate from this organization.  These winning posters will go onto the statewide contest, culminating with the winner being announced at a luncheon in their honor on March 22nd , with family, teachers and principals invited to share in their success.

At the county level each will receive a $200 savings bond with the state winner receiving a $1,000 savings bond. These Posters will be on display at the State Capitol during October 2012 and then come home to the artist.
