Update: Sons Badly Hurt in Crash that Killed their Father

Two children are injured in the wreck

An accident on Interstate 395 Friday night resulted in one death and severe injuries to the sons of the man killed, Connecticut State Police reported Saturday. A Montville man driving one of the four vehicles involved in the crash also was injured.

The events began, police say, when a vehicle driven by Willis Goodale, 50, of Groton, was leaving the Mobile station and, they report, attempting to cross Interstate 395 south to use the emergency vehicle turnaround.

Benjamin DeMond, 33, of Norwich, traveling south on 95, attempted to avoid Goodale’s vehicle and drove through the turnaround.

His car hit a vehicle driven by Andrew Crouch, 59, of Montville. Crouch's car flipped over in the crash, and DeMond's spun into the right lane, where it hit another vehicle, driven by Albert Fisher, 58, of Lisbon.

Demond was killed in the wreck. Crouch also was injured in the crash, police say. Goodale and Fisher were not injured.

According to The Bulletin, DeMond’s two sons were taken to Connecticut Children’s Medical Center in Hartford. Alex, 6, was listed in critical condition Saturday night, and Cole, 4, was listed as being in serious condition, medical center spokesman Eric Berthel said.

State police said Goodale was charged with driving while under the influence of drugs and/or alcohol and is being held on a $1 million bond.

The Bulletin reports this morning that DeMond had been a member of the Norwich Fire Department since March 2006 and belonged to the International Association of Fire Fighters Local No. 892. His death is the first in the department since 1980.

Troop E is conducting an investigation, which is ongoing.
