UPDATE: 9:35 a.m. Tuesday: Somewhere there's a disconnect between what state police say occurred and what the Department of Corrections said happened, but either way, the town was not notified that an inmate had escaped custody, albeit at a halfway house located at the Corrigan Radgowski Correctional Center.

State Police said the escapee fled overnight (Sunday) and today a Corrections spokesperson said the inmate was seen at the 5 a.m. facility "count." Either way, Mayor Ronald McDaniel, who is the Chief of Police for Montville was not notified. He said Monday night he learned about the escape from Facebook, Montville Patch and other news media.

Corrections spokesman Brian Garnett said the inmate was in a minimum security halfway house and was "out in the community" at a job, one Garnett refused to disclose.

If it was an escape from Corrigan, a Level 3/4 security prison, Garnett said, it would have been handled differently. "The community would be notified," he said.

In this case, Garnett said that while technically an escape one could look at it as "he walked away."

State Police Troop E Sgt. John Ceruti gave Patch a press release that stated the CSP was investigating the "escape of DOC inmate" who "fled overnight." Cerutti said CSP was notified just after 9 Monday morning.

Garnett said it was CSP's responsibility to contact the town.

The halfway house is a transitional way station for inmates set for release. It's inclear what date Brum would have been released had he not escaped.

Update: 9:28 p.m.:

Mayor Ronald McDaniel said Monday night that the town was not notified that an inmate had escaped from the Montville-based correctional facility "until very, too, late."

"I was taken by surprise," he told the Public Safety Commission Monday night. "I found out from Facebook, the breaking news (alert and other media outlets," he said. "Not good."

He said the town has reverse 911 system that could have alerted the community that an inmate was on the loose.

A call for clarification to the Department of Corrections was not immediately retuned. Check back Tuesday for updates to this story.

Original Story:

Thomas A. Brum left the facility sometime last night, Resident State Trooper Sgt. Martin 'Marty' Martinez said.

Brum, 27, is a white male, 5' 6" tall, 125 pounds, brown eyes and hair, though he has a close-cropped hair cut and wear a goatee. He has a tattoo on his arm that reads, 'life is a gamble.'

Brum has a long rap sheet that includes burglary convictions.

Martinez said anyone with information should contact police immediately.
