Patch's Poll: Is A One-Year Suspension Enough For Bus Monitor Bullies?

The four middle school students who bullied bus monitor Karen Klein were suspended from school last week and sent to do community service. What do you think about this?

The four students caught on video harassing and verbally abusing an elderly bus monitor have been suspended for a year from their school in Greece, N.Y.

As part of their punishment, the seventh-grade students will also have to serve 50 hours of community service with senior citizens, according to CNN.

The profanity-laced video, posted on YouTube on June 19 and since garnering over 8 million hits, shows the students taunting, poking and using very harsh language against 68-year-old Karen Klein. Klein doesn’t fight back, despite the students’ brutal insults.

Klein told the Associated Press that the students will still be attending an alternative school, and that they “wont be at home doing nothing.” She also told the AP she approved of the punishment, and that she intends to meet with the four students to ask them why they did what they did.

What are your thoughts on this punishment? Is it too much? Not enough? Or should it be more severe? Take our poll and share your thoughts in the comments.

Unfortunately paddling isn't allowed anymore but it's what the kids need. It's called abuse these days but shouldn't be.Working parents want to have their kids like them so they let them get away with anything.

One year suspension, ok.. they need much more community service, at least a year, and it should be REAL community service, not just a platitude. and their parents should be required to pay for any alternative schooling or tutoring they need to keep up with school work.

I believe the cost of sending these kids to an alternative school will be at the expense of the city (tax payers). This I disagree with. Who really 'pays' for their crimes then? The taxpayers or the kids who simply go to a different school for a year? And, 50 hours of community service?? That's nothing...I hope whoever organizes those hours has the common sense to at least seperate those kids and put them in different organizations/facilities. The err of your ways are much more easily seen when you don't have your 'buddies' around you.

It seems the people have spoken. Now the School Board and their attorney need to get out of the fog of they are only kids and or the Dr Spook philosophy and make the kids AND parents responsible for their actions. As for the ACLU, get your heads out of the dark zone.

What's the ACLU got to do with the kids? The ACLU defends the Constitution against attacks from the right or the left. Some like to bash it as a left-wing organization, but it takes no official position on such things as socialism, or the KKK. It's defended the rights of communists to speak out, and the KKK to hold parades. Attacking the
