Read to Ride, Inc. celebrates its 4th year awarding bicycles to local elementary school children

A press release from Read To Ride, Inc.:

This week, Read to Ride, Inc. , a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, will award 96 students in Montville, Norwich, Baltic and Bozrah elementary schools with a new bicycle, helmet and bike lock for participating in their reading incentive program throughout the year.

Read to Ride, Inc’s program is designed not only to exercise the mind through reading, but the body through exercise.

Weekly, students read outside of school for a specified time period and complete a reading log that entitles them to receive a ticket for the drawing for the bike, helmet, and lock. Each year in June, the board members randomly draw a ticket for one boy and one girl from each participating class during a rally held in front of the entire student body.

Former Mayor of Norwich, Ben Lathrop, founded Read to Ride, Inc. in 2009 to encourage a love of reading and exercise in our youth.  Currently William Caron of Montville serves as President and is assisted by an executive board of 10 local business people who will present the bikes at individual school rallies this week.  They have awarded more than 300 bikes, locks and helmets since their inception.
