Shape Up for Summer: Three Exercises to Flatten Your Tummy

Need to trim up your core in a flash? Work these three simple exercises into your routine! They're even toddler-proof!

For many, flattening the core area is a top priority before summer hits!

Dave Barnas, of True Health Unlimited in Tolland, walks us through three great exercises to target the stomach.

In fact, his workout is also perfect for moms who may have to mix in their exercise with childcare! Check out how our Ellington-Somers local editor Erin Quinlan (moonlighting as a Patch Tip fitness demonstrator) is able to get in a full workout with her adorable toddler looking on!

Transversus abdominis

  • Draw in your navel and hold for six to 20 seconds at a time
  • Can be done at work, in the car, at the computer 

Side Plank

  • Targets the obliques to get rid of love handles
  • Place your left elbow underneath your shoulder
  • Elevate your hip and draw in your navel
  • Bring arm up for the advanced version, stretch legs out
  • Hold for six to 20 seconds, three to five sets

Superwoman

  • Extend your right arm, keeping right wrist, shoulder and elbow extended
  • Extend your left leg, flexing at the ankle, knee and hip
  • Hold for six to 20 seconds, then switch swides
  • Complete three to five sets for each side
