Montville Receives New Device to Measure Radiation

The Radiological Portal Monitor Was Supplied by the Millstone Fund

Montville, and the other towns in Millstone’s Emergency Planning Zone have received new devices to test for radioactivity, should there be an event at the nuclear power plant.

The radiological portal monitor that the Millstone Fund supplied to the towns in the zone replaces the handheld dosimeters, and other equipment that the towns have been using for years, says Fire Marshal Ray Occhialini.

The radiological portal monitor was delivered in a box about the size of a large file cabinet. When it is set up, it will be reminiscent of the devices that one crosses through at department and electronics stores.

If someone has a radiation problem, the portal will issue an alert when the person walks through it.

The towns in the Millstone emergency planning zone includ East Lyme, Lyme, Groton, Waterford, New London, Ledyard and Montville, Occhialini said.

Occhialini says this is an excellent time to think about signing up for the state and local emergency alert system.

To do that, click here. It is an easy way to make sure that, in the event of an emergency, you are notified.

You sign up, and then supply the alert system with whatever telephone numbers, email addresses or text numbers you would like to use to receive information about emergencies or alerts in whatever Connecticut areas you select.
