Household Hazardous Waste Disposal Days Are Coming

The next one is in Montville on Aug. 20.

Hazardous Waste Disposal Day is coming up!

Sponsored by the Southeastern Connecticut Regional Resource Recovery Authority, the program allows homeowners in towns across the area to bring hazardous-waste items to a central location – in this instance, Tyl Middle School – where it will be disposed of properly.

Participating communities, according to a press release, include Bozrah, Franklin, Ledyard, Norwich, Stonington, Colchester, Griswold, Montville, Preston, Voluntown, East Haddam, Groton, New London, Salem and Waterford.

Nine hazardous-waste collection days have been scheduled for 2011, and any resident from any of the member towns may participate in any of the collection programs.

Tyl Middle School is on the Chesterfield Road. For information, call 860-848-9411.

Remaining on the schedule are:

  • Sept. 10, Public Works/Highway Department, 11 Wyassup Road, North Stonington. For information, call 860-535-0793.

  • Nov. 5 – Styron (formerly Dow Chemical) parking lot, Route 12, Ledyard. For information, call 860-464-8740.

The hazardous waste disposal program lets you get rid of all that stuff that you don’t know what to do with.

They will accept oil paint and stain, paint thinners, old cans of oven cleaner, rechargeable batteries, old gasoline, fuel additives, fluorescent bulbs, insecticides, herbicides, pool chemicals, and pretty much any awful, dangerous stuff you have.

Not accepted is latex paint, tires, ammunition, auto or marine flares, smoke detectors or radioactive materials.
