Daily Five: Car Wash and Cupcakes, Lockdowns and Light at the End of the Tunnel

The Five includes a look at some of the big stories this week and other stuff, good stuff.

Today’s daily five is more like a week in review. Well at least the past few days.

1. First up, though, the weather. For the second time in less than two weeks, we braced for potentially very dangerous storms that never really materialized. We dodged a bullet twice. I hope this winning streak continues. In the meantime, it’s going to be a hot, muggy summer day with a chance for rain. There.

2. The it may have been nothing. Then again, it may have been something. We may never know. But what we do know, is if it was something, officials were on top of it. That’s what matters.

3. Mayor Ron McDaniel said Thursday that he was told 1 more week for the retaining wall project at and it’s finito! People are at once happy it’s almost done and upset that the project that was supposed to last a few months, ended up taking almost a year. Well, it looks nice and the stone work – by a nice guy from Willimantic – is excellent. Though some have complained one can no longer see the falls for the wall!

4. What happened earlier this week when firefighter was devastating and really just heartbreaking. I met Tim when doing a story for Groton Patch on the great people at Poquonnock Bridge Fire Department.  We didn’t speak but I know he was good people. I have long believed that firefighters our last true heroes.  Our thoughts are with his family during this unfathomably difficult time.

5. The Montville High School at Fair Oaks School to raise money for senior events including prom. The wash is $8 per car. What’s more awesome than munching on cupcakes while you wait for your car to get cleaned? I’m there. From 10 to 2 at the Far Oaks School, 836 Old Colchester Road, Oakdale.
