9/11: Montville Marks the Day with a Solemn Ceremony

Flags, firefighters, police, politicians and citizens turn out for the event

At 8:30 this morning, by the memorials in front of Town Hall, a solemn group gathered under a clear blue sky to mark the 10-year anniversary of the attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon, and Flight 93, which was brought down in Pennsylvania by passengers determined to fight.

The colors were marched in by veterans. The American Legion Motorcycle Club stood at attention, holding American flags. Cyndie Cote sang the national anthem, William Hermann gave a benediction.

Mayor Joe Jaskiewicz read a poem and spoke briefly, noting that this is "a day that has changed the face of America. A day that has changed everything we do."

Sen. Edith Prague, representing the state delegation, spoke about America's recovery, and bravery, and prayed that something like this never happens again.

And a little before 8:46, the moment that the first plane hit the World Trade Center, there was a moment of silence.

A bell was tolled, the flag was lowered to half-staff, and in the background, "Taps" were played.

And on this glorious day, with a sky nearly as blue as the one 10 years ago, the people of Montville hugged, and shook hands, wiped away tears, and went back to their families and their lives.
