Beyond the School Desk: Tips for High School Parents

Have a high school senior? What do you do next?

You can't believe another school year is about to come to a close.  Your head is spinning with all the yearend activities:  outings, proms, finals and graduation.  For parents of HS seniors you stressed through this year helping with college applications, financial aid forms, the dreaded FAFSA and scholarship applications, to help pay for it all.  Now you’re checking off your to-do-list preparing your senior for their next adventure.  For some it will be college, some tech schools, military or straight to the reality of life - working.

Through this blog I hope to share tips I’ve learned along the way, while running the MHS Career Resource Center, to help parents of high school students navigate their way through high school and on.

Some of the topics as we near the end of this school year:

  • Watch the mail / e-mail
  • Scholarship applications – when will we hear
  • Keep a list, check it off
  • Thank you notes

My grandson is a sophomore going onto a junior. We have taken some of essays that he has randomly written and put them aside to be refined for some of the essays that are required for college entrance exams.

Mrs. I will gladly help any student or parent through the transition of HS to college. There is so much to know and she certainly does!! Don't hesitate to ask her.

Can not put a price tag on the valuable information she can pass along.

Ellen - great start. This is a subject I will be addressing in future blogs. Keep in mind that when reviewing the essays not only think of college applications but scholarships as well. The two run parallel with each other – but sometimes we are so focused on college applications we can miss scholarship deadlines.

MINNIE FALTO,
when a person gives advise from their personal experience, you can be sure that it will help the intended recipient. Ms. Ingoglia has gone through the process quite a few times. She has navigated the pages of those applications on line or on paper, therefore I know she knows what she's talking about. If you are smart enoughto pay attention, you'll be forever grateful of the helping hand.

To ignore Mrs. Ingoglia's advice would be a shame for students and parents of college bound children. Years of dedicated service and a wealth of knowledge are what she has to offer. Let her help. Navigating the "collegiate seas" is rough. Having that extra "life jacket" on board is priceless.
