Applying for the FAFSA - Are you on the right web site?

Applying to college is just the first step. The second sept is paying for it. Applying for the FAFSA is your first step - but are you on t

It is that time of year when students are not only applying for colleges but also for financial assistance.  One of the forms used for that is the FAFSA, The Free Application for Federal Student Aid.

The FAFSA is now completed on line.  The problem that arises is when one does a web search for FAFSA, you will get over 3 million hits, of which the first one is a pay site.  But what you have to remember is applying for the FAFSA is FREE, and it is not as complicated as the other sites lead you to believe.

The official web address for the FAFSA is:  http://www.fafsa.ed.gov/

In the past and just recently I've had students come in complaining of having to pay up to $80 dollars to apply for the FAFSA.  It just breaks my heart that they are throwing money away.  The only financial aid form you have to pay for is The CSS Profile and that cost around $25.  This form is requested by private colleges.

In a previous blog I talked about applying for financial aid and compared the FAFSA and the CSS Profile.  FAFSA/CSS Profile What are they?

Now, as a reminder, there are also tons of scholarships that students should be looking into to help offset the costs of continuing your education.

Montville High seniors should be logging into their Naviance Family Connection account and searching through the over 350 scholarships that are listed. Read the Counseling & Career Scholarship Newsletter, (check your emial) which lists all the current scholarships and provides loads of tips and information on scholarships, upcoming events, summer programs, informational articles that can assist you in achieving your next goal.

Visit the Montville High School Counseling web page.  If you missed the College Planning Night and or the Financial Aid Workshop, we have posted links of all the information that was handed out. The Counseling web page also has information on College Admission Resources and Publication Resources. Some of this information is also posted on your Naviance Family Connection account.

You are not alone in this process.  If you feel overwhelmed or not sure what your next step is, make an appointment with your counselor or Mrs. Ingoglia in the Career Resource Center.  We are here to help you and your parents through the process.
