Responsible Campaigning

Montville's Transfer Station; AKA Campaign Central

Over the years Russ Beetham’s soap box was the Montville Transfer Station, whether it be campaigning for office or getting signatures for a referendum.

In recent years the idea has caught on and now both political parties use the facility to meet and pass out information to the public. Because of its popularity, more candidates started showing up at the same time causing delays and back ups on Rte. 163.

For safety reasons, candidates were told to position themselves inside the gate  near the exit. This scenario can also create problems, so candidates need to be responsible and come up with a plan  that will not effect the ebb and flow of vehicles using the Transfer Station.

The Republican Town Committee recognizing this potential problem, offered to set up a schedule with the Democratic candidates giving both parties equal time on alternating days of the weekend up until the election This same idea was endorsed by the Public Works director, and yet the suggestion was flatly rejected by the Democrats.

A schedule such as the one described gives no party an advantage, it just assures less of an inconvenience to the public. The Democrats' refusal to cooperate demonstrates once again their lack of regard for the residents of Montville.
