Sometimes I think teachers are worse than kids. I look forward to this day, the last day of school, for a long time.
One of the neatest things about being a teacher is the cadence of beginnings and endings. The end of the school year is a whirlwind of activity - finishing up those last grades, sending the seniors off at graduation, counting books, putting away all the junk in the classroom so that the wonderful custodians can make it look new again over the summer.
I have NINE WEEKS before the next school year begins.

While that seems like a long time, it zooms by...here's my "bucket list" for the summer (I use this phrase after reading "America's Bucket List 2011" in a recent issue of Parade Magazine.)
ABSOLUTELY POSITIVELY HAVE TO DO

- Study. I'm teaching a new course next year (new to me) and I need to be as up to speed as possible. That includes attending a week-long course specifically designed for high school teachers in the subject. Then study some more, write curriculum, and study some more.
- keep up with the garden-weeding
ALREADY HAVE PLANS/TICKETS TO
- attend two Red Sox games
- celebrate 4th of July with family
- see Tim McGraw at the Mohegan Sun to help support social services in Montville
- celebrate my niece's graduation
INTEND TO DO
- paint a bedroom and a bathroom and maybe a hallway
- replace my cell phone - droid or i-phone? - suggestions are welcome!
- hike a CT trail I haven't hiked before, hopefully with my friend, Beth
- visit two historic sites I haven't visited before (my kids always referred to these places as "brown sign" places)
- read at least 4 novels - suggestions welcome for this one, too!
- learn how to knit mittens
- kayak as often as possible
MOST IMPORTANT OF ALL
- enjoy the summer evenings, relishing the luxury of calm before the frantic pace of the school year begins again, with my family
