Pasta Fresca...Mystic!

Oh goodie, another popularity poll....those old natives, such as my self recall when the only grinder was a "regular" from Patsy, New York Fruit, Fatones, CT Ave Grinder Shop or Charlie and The Whale. The best was Mrs. Montini in Mystic. She used crispy bread, very finely sliced cabbage with real olive oil, imported extra sharp provolone, good salami that had peppercorns in it and fat red tomatoes. You had to call her for an appointment and while she would tolerate a walk-in, you had to wait. I couldn't offer an opinion as to who is "the best" today and I have tried them all. Truth is, when I really want a good grinder, I assemble the ingredients and make my own. It would cost too much for stores to make a really great grinder today and people accept Florida tomatoes, vegetable oil, plastic provolone, skimpy salami and an oversized hot dog roll pretending to be Italian bread... lots of lettuce.

This is terrible but I cannot remember the actual name, I THINK it is Honeybee, of the store across from the Bank Street firehouse in New London - they make an amazing good grinder! Be sure to add extra bacon and baby spinach :)

When I was a kid, the best grinders were from Connie's IGA between the Post Office and the Quaker Hill Firehouse. Now I make it s point to go to Terrace Bakery on Jefferson Ave in New London. Recently remodeled, fast, clean and the best crusty bread. Worth the trip! When I am super hungry, I add the double meat, only $1 more.
