Norwich State Hospital Land Sold for Entertainment Venue

From a spooky hospital to a family entertainment venue, the final parcel of the Norwich State Hospital has been sold.

State lawmakers approved the sale of nearly 50 acres of the Norwich State Hospital property for use “along the lines of family entertainment” Thursday.

The sale fetched 300,000 and included “border both sides of Route 12 and the town of Preston, include about two dozen buildings,” said a report in the Hartford Courant. The location is on the main pathway between the two casinos.

Ron Shelton, the managing director of Thames River Landing, the Farmington-based real estate firm that bought the land, told reporters at the Courant that “plans for the property align with the state’s commitment to boost tourism in the region.”

Environmental cleanup of the site is estimated around $1.1 million to $5 million and Shelton said he hopes to have that "well underway" within 12 months.

According to a report in The Day, the firm has already put down a $30,000 deposit and has $110,000 in eskrow for the purchase.
