MASH's "Iron Chef" Event Features Foxwoods vs. Mohegan Sun on Friday

By Wendy Bury

As Event Chair of the 2013 MASH "Iron Chef" Competition & Auction for Action, I am thrilled to say that I think this is going to be THE foodie event of the summer! Two amazing executive chefs representing Foxwoods and Mohegan Sun, local celebrity judges, live pastry demonstrations by the Executive Pastry Chefs of both casino resorts, live auction, and, of course, the main event, the head-to-head cooking battle!

More info: The Mystic Area Shelter & Hospitality (MASH) is proud to announce the 7th Annual “Iron Chef” Competition & Auction for Action. This annual event raises funds to support local families with children facing homelessness. For this year’s exciting event we return to the beautiful waterfront of St. Edmund’s Retreat at Enders Island on Friday, August 16th from 6 to 10pm. The chef competition begins promptly at 6:30pm.

This year’s “Iron Chef” Competition will feature Executive Chefs from our area’s two resort casinos, Foxwoods and Mohegan Sun.  Chef Edward Allen of Foxwoods Resort Casino and Chef Ryan Calvo of Bar Americain at Mohegan Sun will compete head-to-head in a culinary battle for the 2013 “Iron Chef” title!

“Iron Chef” judges this year include local restaurateurs Daniel Hostettler of Ocean House, Stephanie Houlihan of Water Street Café, Cathleen Holland of S&P Oyster Co. and Jeanie Roland of Ella’s Fine Food & Drink. Event guests will have the chance to bid on the fifth judge spot in a live auction the night of the event!  Jack Falvey Associates of Kingstown, Rhode Island will provide live feed video coverage of the “Iron Chef” competition – guests will feel like they are at a live taping of the popular TV show!

Guests will be treated to complimentary hors d’oeuvres and cocktails, and will have the opportunity to taste local craft beer from Grey Sail Brewing of Rhode Island. We will also have a Pastry Demonstration by Mohegan Sun’s Chef Lynn Mansel and Foxwoods Resort Casino’s Chef Franck Iglesias, with samples to taste at the dessert stations. A live auction following the “Iron Chef” judging will feature exciting one-of-a-kind goods and experiences provided by generous MASH supporters, including a fabulous Ocean House year-round package, a Captained Day Sail aboard a Swan 57 and “Something for Everyone, Every Season” from both Foxwoods Resort Casino and Mohegan Sun.

Ocean House, L+M Hospital, Jack Falvey Associates, Citizens Bank , Charter Oak Credit Union, the Mystic Area Ecumenical Council, Mohegan Sun, Foxwoods Resort Casino, Waterford Group and Stonington Seafood Harvesters have made this event possible through their generous sponsorships.

Guests are also encouraged to enjoy the New England Science & Sailing (NESS) “Oysterfest” benefit on Saturday, August 17, also at Ender's Island.  Part of the proceeds from NESS’s event will support an outreach program for MASH. By ordering tickets to both events, you will receive a 10% discounts for each event.  For information on both events please call the MASH office.

In 2012, MASH provided emergency shelter and services to 77 families, including
255 individual children and parents, facing homelessness. In addition to our emergency shelter program, MASH has increased our focus on re-housing families who are homeless as quickly as possible, and working with families at risk of homelessness to help them avoid losing their housing.
