Do You Like the Doctor's Books?

Would You Give Them Second Looks?

CRAFT

In this country, everyone at some point has read a Dr. Seuss book. We all have a favorite story we remember. "The Cat in the Hat" is probably the most popular of all of the Dr. Seuss books.

Theodor (“Ted”) Seuss Geisel was born on March 2, 1904, in Springfield, MA. To help celebrate his birthday, we are going to make Cat in the Hat hats and treats.

Red crayons or markers

Scissors

White glue

Ruler

Picture 2: Hat shape

Take a large sheet of white paper and cut out a hat shape. It does not have to be perfect, as his hat is not perfect.

Picture 3: Headband

Next, cut out a long strip of either red or white paper and measure it to be a headband around your child's head. Glue into a loop

Picture 4: Hat with stripes

Add red stripes (2 inches wide or so) to make the hat. You can use crayons markers or strips of red paper trimmed to fit the edge of the hat.

Next, cut a strip of paper 2 inches wide and long enough to wrap around a child’s head. Glue the hat to the headband and let it dry. Now you have a Cat in the Hat hat!

Concoctions a la seuss

We start out the day with eggs dyed green, of course!

Then, the night before, I take a ham steak and soak it in water with green food coloring.

After our breakfast of green eggs and ham, we read a book about it.

At lunch time, we read "One Fish, Two Fish," and along with my child’s sandwich, I include goldfish crackers.

Before naptime, we read "The Cat in the Hat" and after naptime, the real fun begins. I usually have everything cut out and we make Cat in the Hat hats.

Then we make Cat in the Hat cookies. These are for dessert after dinner. Allowing them to set up for a few hours in the fridge makes them sturdy enough to serve.
