Photo Gallery: Apple- and Pear-Picking Season Is Here

All the fruit you can handle is just a short trip away!

Apples and pears grow faster than farmers can pick them from the trees, making it prime apple and pear picking season at orchards around the state.

in Ledyard, along with many other orchards, offers seven varieties of apples and people are allowed to roam acres of apple and pear trees until they find just the perfect fruit.

Most varieties, like the Macintosh, macoun and the red and golden delicious apples were made to be sweet and soft enough to eat right from the tree. Older varieties, like the pippin, russet and baldwin were meant to be made into cider or pies and hardy enough to be stored through the winter.
