Daily Five: Montville, Ledyard to Work Together?

Five things to know for Tuesday, April 23, 2013.

1. Today, there is a 30 percent chance of showers, with a high around 53, according to the National Weather Service. Tonight, there is a 20 percent chance of showers, with a low around 41, according to the service.  

2. At the Public Safety Committee meeting Monday, Montville Mayor Ron McDaniel said he is looking to regionalize Montville's dispatch services with Ledyard.

Montville just completed its new public safety complex and the town has the ability to bring other towns onto its system, which should lower the cost for all parties involved, McDaniel said. He said he is talking with Ledyard to try to bring them on board, and he said he hopes to bring on other towns as well.

McDaniel said he should be giving Ledyard an estimate of how much it would cost them to join in with Montville soon. 

3. Montville's Adult Volleyball League has begun, according to the minutes from the last Town Council Meeting. Anyone interested in playing is welcome to come and play on Friday nights, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Tyl Middle School.

4. Tonight, the Montville Town Council will hold a public hearing on the Board of Education's budget at 6 at Montville High School.

The Board of Education's budget proposal for the 2013-14 fiscal year is $36.6 million - the same amount it is this year. The state penalizes municipalities if they cut their budget for education from the previous year. 

5. On this date in 1985, Coca-Cola changed its formula and released New Coke. It wound up being a disaster and the old formula was back on the market within three months. And on this date, the first public school in the United States – Boston Latin School – was founded in Boston.
