United Way Announces More than $2.7 Million in Funding

United Way of Southeastern Connecticut’s Board of Directors has approved fund distributions in the amount of $2,725,824 for the fiscal year 2013-14. This funding supports 51 programs at nonprofit organizations in New London County that, working together, help advance the common good for everyone.

United Way of Southeastern Connecticut partner programs fall into one of four priority areas that provide people with the building blocks to a good quality of life: thriving children, basic needs, community wellness, and promoting independence.

In addition to these distributions, United Way 2-1-1 receives $51,050. 2-1-1 is a 24-hour information and referral helpline that is available free of charge to anyone in Connecticut. 2-1-1 is a partnership between Connecticut United Ways and the State of Connecticut. The American Red Cross will also receive $66,372 for two programs – Armed Forces Emergency Services and Disaster Services.

Leading the program review and fund distribution each year are volunteers that bring experience and expertise in health and human services. Volunteer teams are convened to evaluate program performance and financial health and analyze program results. United Way’s Allocations Cabinet Co-chairs then makes funding recommendations to the full board of directors for approval.

Virginia L. Mason, President & CEO of United Way of Southeastern Connecticut, says “This hard work is done by dedicated individuals that volunteer their time to make important decisions. They share our passion for changing lives and strengthening the community.”

Joan Wessell, Co-chair of the Allocations Cabinet along with Bob Gunnels, notes “United Way and the volunteers work closely with partner programs to ensure that donors’ generous contributions are carefully and thoughtfully invested to help improve community conditions in the areas of basic needs, thriving children, community wellness, and promoting independence. I can assure United Way donors that we take our job seriously, and strive to make the best decisions possible that advance the common good for all.”
