Spiritual Fair to be held in Norwich this Wednesday

The Faith Steering Committee of the Southeastern Mental Health Authority will hold a Spiritual Fair on Wednesday, December 4th from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at the SMHA building, located at 401 West Thames Street in Norwich.  The fair is free and open to the public.  The event will incorporate a variety of world faith traditions, including Christianity, Judaism, Islam, Buddhism, Bahá’i, and Wicca.   Attendees will be able to visit informational booths manned by representatives from numerous local faith communities, enabling them to proceed at their own pace, and in a more open and informal atmosphere.   The event also features a number of spiritual practices, including finger labyrinths, origami peace cranes, and music.  Lunch will be provided to those who sign in at the door.  Visitors will also be able to visit SMHA’s Reflection Room and take home copies of personal stories of hope and recovery written by local individuals.  Please bring a canned item to support the St. Vincent de Paul Food Pantry.

The Faith Steering Committee was formed in 2007 in recognition of the overwhelming evidence that spirituality and faith are a valuable component of the recovery process for those with mental illnesses.  Inclusion in a faith-based community offers hope, as well as comfort and fellowship in difficult times.   Many people living with mental illnesses attest that spirituality has a positive impact on their ability to cope with life's stresses.   The Steering Committee, whose representatives include mental health providers, consumers, family members, and area faith leaders, to promotes communication and collaboration between area mental health providers and area faith communities in support of the recovery process.
