Norwich Resident Receives a “Surprise” $50,000 Lottery Prize Win

Susan Weber of Norwich was very excited when she found 9 complete words on her CT Lottery “Super Cashword 16” instant ticket for a $5,000 prize win.  She became ecstatic, however, when she later learned she had 10 words and her ticket and was actually a $50,000 top prize winner.

“I went to a High-Tier Claim Center to claim my prize and he told me he couldn’t cash it…because it was for $50,000!  I just stood there in shock…looking at him,” Weber told Lottery officials with a laugh.  “I called my husband to tell him—he didn’t believe me—then I programmed the CT Lottery’s address in my GPS and came right on in.”

Weber, who has happily worked at the College Mart Flea Market snack bar in Jewett City for the past 15 years, accepted a prize check at Lottery headquarters in Rocky Hill for $34,151 (value after taxes).  “I’m going to pay off my car and some bills, set aside some Christmas money for my nine grandkids, and put the rest in savings,” Weber said.

For selling Weber her top prize winning ticket, ShopRite of Norwich, located at 634 W. Main Street in Norwich, will receive a $500 bonus check from the CT Lottery.

The game Super Cashword, similar in style to a crossword puzzle, has been a long-time fan favorite since it was first launched by the CT Lottery in 2002.  Those who enjoy the extended style of play build prizes upon how many matches are made as the play is completed.

There are 21 top prizes of $50,000 in the $5 game Super Cashword 16; currently 17 top prizes remain to be claimed.  Overall odds of winning a prize are 1 in 3.74.
