On Saturday July 23rd, 2011 about 115 people turned out to support three local town Department’s: the Montville Police D.A.R.E. program, The Montville Senior and Social Services Department, and the Montville Youth Service Bureau in their efforts to raise funds for their respective departments.
With the help of Town Councilman William “Billy” Caron, who serves as a liaison to both the Youth Services and the Senior and Social Services Departments, and the Mohegan Tribe, a plan was created to sell skybox tickets to the Tim McGraw, Luke Bryan, and the Band Perry concert being held on Saturday, July 23rd.
After expenses the total amount raised was about $6,000.00, which the three departments had agreed to split three ways, netting each about $2,000.00. For some people this may not seem like a lot of money, but the departments were thrilled with the results.
Since being appointed as the new School Resource Officer, Officer Karen Moorehead no longer serves as the D.A.R.E. Officer, but she was happy that she could help raise the money for the program “You can do a lot of really great things for the kids with the money that was raised, having been such a big part of the D.A.R.E. program, I was proud to do anything that will help spread the D.A.R. E. message, I believe in it.”
Director of Youth Services Barbara Lockhart agrees, “For us it is always about the kids and families, we plan on using most of what we raised to support supply needs for our Stocking Stuffer Drive for the families that will be struggling during the holiday season this year, we love this program, and we actively involve our kids in the project, giving back to your community is what matters.”
Director of Senior and Social Services Kathie Doherty-Peck echoes the sentiment, “Every bit of additional funding we can raise only serves to help the people in our community that are less fortunate, these funds will help to provide food and heat this winter to families who really need the assistance, from young families to our senior citizens, it feels good to give back.”
Billy Caron also agrees, “When you think about it all three of these departments offer our community a lot, safety, security, and support, how can you not get behind that?”
The departments hope to make this an annual fundraising event and wish to extend a heartfelt thank you to the Mohegan Tribe for their continued support of the Montville community!
