Update: Nook Appears to Be a Total Loss (with Video)

Electrical issue sparked the fire that probably began above the restaurant's ceiling

, at 311 Norwich-New London Turnpike, is destroyed after an electrical fire this morning.

Fire Marshal Ray Occhialini said that a 911 call about smoke came in around 3 a.m. It appears that the fire happened primarily in the space between the ceiling of the restaurant and the roof of the building, Occhialini said.

Power surges during the heavy rain last night could have contributed to the issue, he said. "And there's a lot of old stuff in the electrical panel," he said, "and maybe some wiring was overloaded."

Occhialini said that Kristen Servidio, who owns the restaurant, had been having electrical problems, and "had electricians in, looking at stuff," Occhialini said.

All four town fire departments - Montville, Mohegan, Oakdale, Chesterfield – responded, as did Quaker Hill, the Mohegan Tribe and the Sub Base.

Jody Telage, who owns the barbershop next door to The Nook, says she feels lucky that her building wasn't damaged. The fire was so close, it could easily have spread, but the barbershop was OK this morning.

Telage said she really enjoyed the Nook's food, and the nicely decorated dining area.

"I'm going to miss her," she said.

Patrick McCormack, Director of Health at the Uncas Health District, was on the scene this morning, checking The Nook and also businesses nearby, all of which were deemed fine.

He will do an inspection before The Nook reopens.

According to tax records, the building was constructed in 1900.
